In a startling decision by the jury, Casey Anthony was found not guilty on the charges of first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse and aggravated manslaughter of her then two-year-old daughter, Caylee. Anthony was found guilty on four counts of providing false information to law officials.

As the jury announced each verdict, Anthony started to sob and then began smiling and laughing with her lawyers. The defense was tearful and smiling, with lots of hugs all around. Jose Baez, Anthony’s defense attorney, said in a public statement that the verdict was bittersweet.

“I’m happy for Casey, but I’m saddened for her…There are no winners in this case. Caylee has passed on far, far too soon.” Baez said.

The court’s ruling was not greeted by smiles from everyone. Upon hearing the verdict, parents Cindy and George Anthony got up and left the courtroom. Many viewers said that they felt “sick,” and that the decision was “ridiculous.”

Twitter, Facebook, and other social networks were flooded with negative reactions to the outcome. Many showed their disappointment in the justice system.

However, the defense is pleased with the results.

Baez said, “When I go home and my daughter asks me, ‘What did you do today?’ I can say, ‘I saved a life.’”
