At about 10 pm, after killing two security personnel at the gate, the gunmen proceeded to terrorize the hotel guests by smashing the doors and chasing them out. They then detonated a bomb on the second floor. Afghan police exchanged fire with the suicide attackers with machine-guns and grenades.

Around 2 am, two NATO helicopters fired at and killed 3 of the Taliban members. US forces were called in to assist with the attack.

At 4 am, only one of the attackers was still standing and continued to fight against the police and forces until 6:20 am.

This is not the first attack that the Inter-Continental has endured. Between 1992 and 1996, twenty-two rockets were launched at the hotel. In 2003, a rocket went off near the hotel, although it did not cause any fatalities.
